Principal's Message

Picture
Welcome to the 2021-2022 school year! It is my honor to serve the students, families, and staff of Baldwin Hills Elementary Pilot and Gifted Magnet.  As we embark on the upcoming school year the focus of our learning community remains unchanged.
Baldwin Hills is a model for culturally responsive instruction where students’ language and history are consistently validated and affirmed in an academically rigorous and emotionally safe environment.  The dynamic and innovative staff recognizes the importance of utilizing students’ cultural capital to design curriculum that is relevant and standards-based. As a pilot school, we have the autonomy to design learning experiences that work best for our students. The strength of our instructional program is evidenced by several accolades including Baldwin Hills Elementary Pilot and Gifted Magnet’s recognition as a California Distinguished School for Closing the Achievement Gap.

We will continue to strengthen partnerships with all community members to provide culturally responsive and academically rigorous instruction.  Home and school connections are essential to building a learning environment that celebrates students and encourages life-long learning that supports students as they develop social-political consciousness and become responsible citizens.  We will continue to grow together as a community of learners and go above and beyond to meet the social emotional and academic needs of our children.

I look forward to the opportunity to meet each family and staff member as we support each student as they become “…poised and ready to soar.”

Your Proud Principal,
Regina D. Myles

Akwaaba! Hello! Welcome!

I am excited to be your FIRST Community Schools Coordinator at Baldwin Hills Elementary Pilot and Gifted High Ability Magnet. My responsibility includes expanding the horizons of learning, building relationships with families, working with the community to realize a shared vision and more importantly caring for the whole child.

This is a new position for our school and me! I know many of you are familiar with me being Baldwin’s 4th/5th grade teacher but now I am in a role to impact and our students, teachers, parents, and the community surrounding our school.

I am native of Los Angeles. I grew up and currently live in the neighborhood surrounding Baldwin. I'm a proud member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. I love fried chicken. I eat sushi. I listen to jazz and hip-hop. Gooooo 49er’s!!!
Hi, I'm Carly Payne and I have been teaching for 20 years in K-5 classrooms. My two most favorite subjects are reading and math; reading takes me to another world, and I am fascinated by all the patterns in math. In my free time you will find me curled up with a good book, bike riding with my family, or watching a Laker game. Go Lakers!

Pilot Highlights:

Baldwin Hills Elementary Pilot & Gifted Magnet School is unique and has a reputation for being a gem among LAUSD schools because of our success educating African-American and Latino children. Though high achieving, we believe there should not be a ceiling on achievement and that we can do more if given the autonomy to make decisions that directly impact the children we know so well and teach. Our aim is to create an academically rigorous, culturally responsive instructional program that can propel students to meet their limitless potentials. To meet this goal, we intend to actively solicit greater parent and community engagement and partnerships by increasing outreach efforts, implementing a STEAM centered curriculum utilizing project and problem-based learning while continuing to affirm who our students are and what they bring through employing culturally and linguistically responsive pedagogical practices, along with increasing staff collaboration around planning, assessment, curriculum and instruction through the establishment of professional learning communities (PLCs).

Academic Enrichment:

- Chess
- Yoga
- Engineering
- Robotics
- P.S. Arts (Music, Dance, Drumming)
- Instrumental Music (Grades 4 & 5)
